Abstract: The teaching of English in Brazil has always been linked to the world scenario and its historical context, and its domain is synonymous with social status. In the school context, however, its presence does not occupy a purely representative role. In this sense, the present work presents an excerpt from research carried out with English language teachers from public schools in the city of Paulo Afonso, aiming to outline their profile, as well as to know their conceptions concerning the process of teaching and learning the language. An analysis of the role of the English language as a discipline and its social relevance is also presented in the light of the BNCC. The results of the research are shown through tables, with a conclusion based on the data presented.
