Abstract: Rural education in Brazil has a curricular history, which disadvantages the teaching of this population. Education in rural communities has always been offered in a unique way, without offering learning conditions that would meet the needs of the local community. In this work we aim to observe, through a qualitative bibliographic study, how rural schools develop their school curriculum and whether local knowledge is valued in its implementation. Studies published in the last ten years (2010-2020) available in the Scielo, Periodico Capes, MEC Portal and UFPI and PUCPR archives were analyzed. It was found that, in general, teaching in the field remains based on inadequate curricula to serve this audience and that there were not many innovations and investments in this modality. The curriculum is ready and planned based on an urban model, without considering the reality of students living in the countryside and their local knowledge and without the concern with the deepening of school knowledge. This curriculum needs to undergo urgent changes in order to meet the needs of this population. On the other hand, it can also be observed that it is possible to create a curriculum that contemplates the students' knowledge and daily life and bases the pedagogical practices on reality.
