Abstract: The risks of disasters triggered by natural events have increased in Brazil due to the vulnerability of society and the increase in the occurrence of extreme events. Environmental Education figures as an antidote to the tragedy that can strike the most vulnerable populations, who live in areas lacking basic infrastructure, around rivers and on slopes subject to mass movements. This article discusses the relevance of Environmental Education in strengthening the perception and communication of disaster risks from the perspective of Enrique Leff's political ecology. The methodology involved a bibliographic survey on the theme of awareness and on the protagonism of the community. A theoretical reflection is presented and gaps in disaster communication are illustrated. It is highlighted in the conclusions that community means of communication have an important potential in education, not only for the contents they disseminate, but, mainly, for the opportunity of direct participation of citizens in the whole process.
