Abstract: The aim of this chapter is to bring together the initial findings of the research carried out in Brazil, with funding from the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award, at the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador. While my first book examined how the sexual policing of Black women was foundational to the city of San Diego’s development as a center of tourism and the military, my second book takes a more transnational approach by investigating the central role that lesbian/gay/queer African Americans play in shaping and disrupting black indigenous culture in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil – a city whose economy is dependent on (black) heritage tourism.
