DRUG INTERACTION IN ELDERLY: A DANGEROUS COMBINATION
O crescimento da população idosa tem resultado em surgimento de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, como a hipertensão arterial sistêmica, diabetes mellitus, dislipidemias, doenças cardiovasculares entre outras. Nessa situação, o uso de medicamentos para essas comorbidades tem sido alvo de discussões devido as possíveis interações medicamentosas (IMs) que oferecem risco significativo ao indivíduo e ineficácia no tratamento da doença. Sabe-se que o uso de dois ou mais fármacos juntos aumenta consideravelmente as chances de se ter alteração de seus efeitos farmacológicos: potencializando seu efeito terapêutico e adverso ou anulando-os. Mesmo que seja possível uma combinação benéfica, na maioria das vezes, ela pode ser tóxica e causar prejuízos ao paciente, além de comprometer os resultados objetivados com seu uso. Situação essa conhecida como “interação medicamentosa (IM)”. Nesse contexto, essa pesquisa tem por objetivo realizar um levantamento bibliográfico de estudos que trazem melhor compreensão das IMs entre os fármacos mais utilizados pela população idosa, além de informações em relação à função dos mesmos e os riscos que podem causar para os pacientes.

Abstract:
The growth of the elderly population has resulted in the emergence of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemias, cardiovascular diseases, among others. In this situation, the use of medications for these comorbidities has been the subject of discussions due to possible drug interactions that offer significant risk to the individual and ineffectiveness in the treatment of the disease. It is known that the use of two or more drugs together considerably increases the chances of having changes in their pharmacological effects: enhancing or canceling their therapeutic and adverse effect. Even if a beneficial combination is possible, in most cases, it can be toxic and cause harm to the patient, in addition to compromising the intended results with its use. This situation is known as “drug interaction”. In this context, this research aims to carry out a bibliographic survey of studies that bring a better understanding of drug interactions among the medications used the most by the elderly population, in addition to information regarding their function and the risks they may cause for patients.
