Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Vaginismus and dyspareunia constitute genitopelvic pain and penetration disturbance (GPPPD), making sexual intercourse difficult. This dysfunction has multifactorial causes and a high prevalence. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to address the main causes of GPPPD, its harmful effects on women's quality of life, and the relevance of knowledge about sexuality in medicine for a better prognosis for patients. METHODOLOGY: This is an integrative literature review. To do this, the SciELO, PubMed, and LILACS databases were used. For the selection of research, the keywords were used as described by Decs: "dyspareunia," "sexual dysfunction," "epidemiology," "vaginismus," and "sexuality." Finally, 7 articles were used, ranging from 2009 to 2022. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The analyzed articles showed the etiological, biological, psychological, relational, and cultural causes of vaginismus. Furthermore, it highlighted the high prevalence of sexual dysfunctions and the unpreparedness of doctors in addressing them, as well as the effects on the quality of life of women with genitopelvic pain and penetration difficulties. CONCLUSION: Genitopelvic dysfunctions have a profound impact on women's sexual and personal spheres. In this regard, qualified care for affected patients is necessary to ensure their quality of life.
