Abstract: This work aims to analyze the legacies of the Treaty of Madrid (1750) in the current municipal territory of Dom Pedrito - RS. Specifically, it investigates whether the demarcation line between the two Iberian crowns, Portugal and Spain, passed through the regions of Bagé and Dom Pedrito, and explores the consequences of this demarcation for the occupation of this space. Employing a theoretical bibliographic analysis and Lefebvre's (1999) Regressive-Progressive dialectical method, the study seeks to address these objectives. The examined references indicate that the border between Portugal and Spain in Rio Grande do Sul passed through the region of Bagé. However, disagreements emerged among Iberian demarcators concerning the definition of the sources of the Santa Maria River. This issue remained unresolved by European courts, and, coupled with other diplomatic matters, led to the revocation of the Treaty of Madrid in 1761.
