Abstract: Teaching is a social activity permeated by the practices of the professionals who make up the teaching profession. These practices are diverse, ranging from the approach to content in the classroom to the establishment of affective relationships with students. In this context, the present study aims to: understand the extent of teaching practice in students’ lives; analyze the importance of a sensitive teaching practice in promoting healthy relationships between teachers and students; and identify teaching practices that inspire and engage students, as well as those that produce trauma and stifle students’ dreams. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using a case study methodology. Data collection was conducted during the first semester of 2024 with students enrolled in the second and third semesters of the Mathematics and Physics teacher education programs at the Federal Institute of Ceará (IFCE), Cedro Campus. The purpose of the activity was to discuss and problematize teaching practice through the writing of a letter, based on a reflective assumption centered on the question: “What kind of teacher do I want to be?” Data interpretation was carried out through Bardin’s (2016) content analysis. For analytical purposes, two categories were selected within the theme: inspiring teaching practice and oppressive (or inhibiting) teaching practice. The study concludes that teaching practice can, throughout its process, enable either an exclusionary education or a liberating education, highlighting the need for education professionals to engage in continuous training and ongoing reflection on their own practice.
