Abstract: The growing concern with soil quality preservation and the need to monitor areas contaminated by heavy metals bring the importance of this study, which aims to analyze the spatial distribution of natural levels of heavy metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn), at depth of 0-20 cm, in representative soils of the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro using the geostatistical tool. Sixty-two samples were collected in areas with no or low anthropic activity and the analysis of the semivariogram related to the concentrations of heavy metals showed spatial dependence for a range of 35.0 km. Isotropy was demonstrated for this case study. The theoretical models spherical, exponential, and Gaussian were those that presented the best adjustments to the points of the experimental semivariograms. The interpretations of the distribution maps of natural metal contents indicate the influence of lithology, mineralogical composition of the clay fraction and the relief in the soils of the study area, which associated with the transport of finer soil particles and the solubilization of Mn, are exposing more subsurface horizons with higher levels of Pb and Cu, associated with Fe and Al oxides, of lower solubility, in the highest parts, as well as in the accumulation of the metals Zn, Ni and Co in the lowest parts of the relief, associated with oxides of Mn of greater solubility.
