Abstract: Recent studies has been suggesting a transition in health monitoring and management methods. Technologies involving telemedicine, app smartphone and other digital technologies have been developed with the aim of promoting healthy aging and contributing to disease self-management. Knowing that one of the main causes of disability in elderly population is falls, devices capable of monitoring aspects of mobility through movement sensors, such as accelerometers or gyroscopes, are a promising strategy for managing this condition, which is expensive and has a high prevalence among the elderly population. The objective of the present study was to review the literature on digital devices for monitoring falls in the elderly. It was observed that the most used fall detection system is the smartwatch. However, scientific literature has demonstrated that, due to the freedom of movement of the arms, the wrist is generally not the most suitable place to characterize the dynamics of the human body during falls. More technologically advanced devices, which include a combination of several types of sensors, could promote a substantial improvement in the effectiveness of the algorithms used to detect and prevent falls.
