Abstract: Excessive mobile device use among Brazilian youth aged 10 to 18 is linked to various negative impacts on their mental health and academic performance. Brazil leads the global ranking with 96% of young people connected, a rate 14% above the global average. This high screen exposure is associated with an increase in symptoms of anxiety and depression, with 50.6% of adolescents reporting anxiety symptoms and 31.4% reporting depression. In schools, the increased use of technology was intensified by the pandemic, sparking discussion around the effects of screen use in educational environments. UNESCO reports (2023) indicate that excessive use of digital devices can impair social interaction, reduce attention, and increase student distraction. Several countries have regulated the use of devices in schools, but Brazil lacks a national policy. Studies show that restricting cell phone use can improve academic performance and reduce cases of cyberbullying, fostering a healthier environment. On the other hand, when used in a targeted manner, mobile devices can enrich learning and encourage essential digital skills. Thus, technology in education requires a careful balance between restrictions and pedagogical uses to maximize its benefits and minimize adverse effects.
