Abstract: the spread of digital information and communication technologies (ICTs) has promoted changes in social relations and reveals a challenging scenario for education. Even though current laws and regulations concerning national education in Brazil already provide guidelines for the inclusion of technologies in the school curriculum and in teacher education, there is still a considerable gap between practices taking place in and outside the classroom, which calls for a discussion of the implications of using digital ICTs in educational contexts. This research study investigates the relation between continuing teacher education and the use of technologies and aims to address teachers' comments on both issues. Grounded on an interpretative approach, the methodology included interviews with public school teachers from Mato Grosso state who participate in continuing education courses and use technologies with their students. The theoretical framework includes studies on teacher education, use of technologies (Gatti and Barretto, 2009; Santos et al, 2013), and language as a social practice (Fairclough, 2001). Results show that teachers believe there is still a need for technical training and for combining theory and practice. Moreover, data reveal the need to rethink the organization of continuing education courses. These findings indicate potential changes in the use of technologies as an element that can help transform educational actions in public schools.
