Abstract: This article was created based on the results obtained from the research carried out during the Course Conclusion Work to obtain a Bachelor's degree in History. This research straddles the prisms of the History of Education and Political History in Santa Catarina and seeks to contribute to discussions about the involvement of intellectuals, educators and politicians in promoting and debating policies for the nationalization of education in the state during the First Republic, with a focus on analysing the theses and speeches recorded in the Proceedings of the 1st State Conference on Primary Education in 1927. This document is available in digital format in the Institutional Repository of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. It consists of theses, opinions and the debates of different intellectuals who were instrumental in thinking about education in the state. The event took place in Florianópolis and lasted six days, from July 31 to August 5, 1927. It was attended by teachers, renowned intellectuals, politicians, principals and inspectors of education, who met to discuss the main problems affecting primary education in Santa Catarina. A total of 51 theses were submitted to be presented at the event, divided into fourteen pre-defined thematic axes. In this sense, five theses were chosen to be addressed in this article, two from the thematic axis "Nationalization and Teaching" and three from the axis "School Inspection". I would like to point out that I will address the nationalization of teaching on two fronts, the first being the discourses themselves that deal with nationalism and its role in teaching, and also through its supervisory bias and its main tool, school inspection. To carry out the historiographical operation of historicizing this research object, I used Serge Berstein's (2009) studies on the concept of political culture as theoretical tools, as well as the contributions of Jean-François Sirinelli (1998) and Ângela de Castro Gomes to understand the subjects present at the Conference within the concept of intellectual. The educational proposals and projects drawn up by the small group of intellectuals and politicians taking part in the 1st State Conference on Primary Education were consolidated around the affirmation of Brazilian identity, mainly through primary education institutions. In this sense, it was possible to see how Santa Catarina collaborated in the process of forming and reaffirming this Brazilian identity, forming part of the scenario of policies implemented at a larger, national level.
