Abstract: The brazilian education, in the construction of a more flexible and contextualized curriculum, aiming at full-time high school, included elective subjects as part of students' training itineraries. Given this context, this study aims to understand the contributions of elective courses in the area of Biology to the training of high school students. To this end, the exploratory and qualitative research collected data from the application of a questionnaire to 3rd year high school students at a full-time public school in Iguatu, Ceará, Brazil. Students decide on elective courses as a means of directing their studies after high school, whether from an academic and/or professional perspective. However, we highlight that students have varied participation in elective courses. This diversity makes it possible to recognize yourself in the construction of your own training, through new experiences. On the other hand, some students limit themselves to the training itinerary exclusively with an emphasis on the academic and/or professional future, excluding participation in sports and cultural activities offered by electives named as student clubs. They prioritize electives aimed at ENEM, especially when dealing with subjects related to the teaching of Biology. Thus, through curricular and methodological diversity, we observed advances in student protagonism and comprehensive training, especially in the construction of significant scientific knowledge, since the training path selected by the student enables a contextualized education.
