Abstract: Macroalgae extracts, especially Kappaphycus alvarezii, have been widely used in the manufacture of fertilizers and biostimulants. These positive effects of Kappaphycus alvarezii extracts appear to be related to their chemical and structural composition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize, both in compositional and nutritional terms, different fractions of the algae Kappaphycus alvarezii, including the aqueous extract and solid biomass, without the addition of preservatives. The extraction and obtaining of the fractions and extracts resulted in Kappaphycus alvarezii liq (K-liq), in addition to an insoluble residual solid biomass (K-sol), dried in a freeze-dryer and in an oven, and their elemental composition and nutrient content were determined. The aqueous extracts, especially the lyophilized one (K-liqL), maintained a rich composition of macro and micronutrients, such as K, P, Ca and Mg, in addition to a lower C content, resulting in a low C:N ratio, making K-liqL a good candidate for use as a foliar product. The residual dry biomass (K-sol) presented lower amounts of nutrients, but still at relevant levels, in addition to a higher C content, leading to a high C:N ratio, indicating that K-sol is more suitable for soil application, favoring carbon input and nutrient retention in the rhizosphere.
