Abstract: This article seeks to explore the human mind’s ability to differentiate imagination from reality by analyzing neuroscientific evidence on brain activation associated with real and imagined movements. Studies show that certain areas of the brain, such as the motor cortex and mirror neuron circuits, are activated both during the execution and when observing or imagining movements. However, brain activation during imagination is not identical to that observed during real actions, suggesting that the brain maintains the distinction between perception and thought. We discuss how this differentiation occurs and how involuntary motor impulses are not evidence of confusion between reality and imagination, but rather of a functional and adaptive brain mechanism. Furthermore, we emphasize that this activation is specific to motor actions, without the full replication of the neural pathways of real execution. We also address the role of the neural mechanism that constantly returns the individual to the present, preventing prolonged involvement with imagination.
