Abstract: Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) are designated legal spaces that are crucial for environmental conservation, providing both ecological and social advantages. This study concentrates on the APP situated along the banks of the Mãe Luzia River, within the urban boundaries of the district headquarters of Nova Veneza, Santa Catarina. In light of this context, the research poses the following primary inquiry: what is the present condition of occupation and management of the APP adjacent to the Mãe Luzia River, within the urban limits of Nova Veneza? The aim is to assess the usage and conservation status of these areas, thereby fostering a discussion on the necessity for more effective public policies and environmental restoration initiatives. The area under investigation exhibits signs of escalating urban development, which, when coupled with the ongoing mining operations in the vicinity, has led to significant environmental alterations. The release of effluents from coal mining, along with improper disposal of solid waste and sewage, poses a threat to the environmental integrity of the river. These activities contribute to the gradual deterioration of riparian forests and undermine the ecological function of the APP.
