Abstract: The Engenho road is a road that crosses residential and non-urbanized areas in the city of Pelotas/RS, bordered by a rainwater drainage channel that leads water to the São Gonçalo Canal, an important water body in southern Brazil. This area is the target of the irregular disposal of urban waste, such as electronics, rich in copper. Monitoring this metal in natural environments and regions of human habitation is important due to its potential harmful effects resulting from its action on metabolic pathways. The objective of this work was to determine copper levels in sediment samples from the rainwater drainage channel parallel to the Engenho road in Pelotas RS. For this, sediment samples underwent pseudo-total acid digestion, and their extracts were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. This study proved the close relationship between copper levels and the inadequate disposal of solid waste due to the irregular disposal of domestic and electronic waste with levels higher than 35.7 mg∙Kg-1 established by CONAMA with level one where possible toxic effects are already beginning to be observed.
