Abstract: Stroke is a medical emergency and one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. It is characterized by a sudden interruption of cerebral blood flow, caused by either ischemia or haemorrhage, leading to neurological damage that affects the survivors' quality of life. In Portugal, stroke imposes a significant disease burden, particularly among older populations, although an increase is also observed among younger individuals, reflecting a concerning trend across Europe. Early detection is crucial for mitigating stroke consequences but requires a thorough knowledge of its early signs. Initiatives such as the "FAST" method and the implementation of stroke pathways have proven effectiveness in reducing the time between symptom onset and treatment. However, low health literacy and disparities in access to information limit the impact of these strategies, especially in more isolated communities. Although public initiatives exist to promote stroke prevention, there is still a long way to go in promoting healthy lifestyles and health education. Awareness-raising campaigns are essential to reduce stroke incidence and improve the population's response to warning signs, helping prevent permanent disabilities and improve clinical outcomes.
