Abstract: Population growth is directly associated with the expansion of production in agro-industries, increasing the demand for energy and, consequently, the generation of waste, especially in rural environments, where improper disposal or lack of treatment of this waste can generate negative environmental impacts. A viable alternative for treating this waste is to use anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and then generate electricity. However, the generation of biogas on small farms faces challenges, such as the lack of technical assistance and the adoption of inadequate practices. To overcome these obstacles, the implementation of cooperative agro-energy condominiums is a viable alternative. It is important to emphasize that the implementation of such condominiums contributes to the achievement and application of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals have a broad scope, ranging from the imperative of providing basic sanitation and universal access to clean energy sources, to establishing sustainable cities and communities, promoting responsible consumption and undertaking actions to combat global climate change. In this context, this chapter offers a review of biogas production on small farms in line with the SDGs, also covering anaerobic digestion projects for agricultural waste, contributing to the substantial improvement of a given region.
