Abstract: Brazil is a major producer of rice and has a production considered in the Northeast. Commonly its cultivation occurs under flood irrigation, and demands a lot of water. Knowing that in this region, mainly in the semi-arid region, water scarcity is a constant, it is necessary to use water in the ideal amount for the development of the plant. The objective was to evaluate the initial development in white and red rice submitted to different irrigation depths. The experiment was carried out at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco - Academic Unit of Serra Talhada (UFRPE-UAST) in economical sites. The design was randomized blocks in split plots (5x2) with four replications. The plots corresponded to water depths in relation to crop evapotranspiration (ETc): (T1= 50%; T2= 75%; T3= 100%; T4= 125% and T5= 150%). The rice varieties: White Rice (AB) and Red Rice (AV), represented as subplots. The irrigation system was subsurface and 51 days after germination (51 DAG) the live plants were counted (%M) and the fresh and dry mass of the aerial part and root was collected for analysis, as well as the measurement roots length (CR). It was observed that the increase in water depths decreased the plant mortality rate. Red rice had greater root length than white rice. However, irrigation with values above the crop's evapotranspiration 1 Bacharel em Agronomia, UAST, UFRPE, Serra Talhada, PE. 2 Discente, UAST,UFRPE, CEP 56903-240, Serra Talhada, PE.
