Abstract: This chapter analyzes the relationship between school dropout and endogenous development at the upper secondary level in the municipality of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. It begins with the premise that upper secondary education plays a key role in both territorial and human development, and that its abandonment directly affects the community’s productive and social capacities. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, using descriptive and correlational methods, and integrates documentary analysis, interviews, and statistical review. The results show that in the last three years, 45 students have dropped out, with employment in the mezcal sector identified as the main reason for leaving school. Economic, social, and organizational factors combine with intra-school elements to create a persistent pattern of dropout. The study concludes that school retention is closely linked to the strengthening of endogenous development and that it is necessary to implement contextualized educational strategies that foster retention by articulating efforts among local actors, families, and the productive sector.
