Abstract: This chapter addresses the paradigm shift in the electricity sector with the transition from centralized generation to the Distributed Generation (DG) and Microgrid (MR) ecosystem. A detailed analysis of AC and DC microgrid architectures is presented, and, centrally, the AC/DC Hybrid topology, highlighting their respective advantages and integration challenges. The hierarchical control structure divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary levels is discussed, with emphasis on primary control strategies by droop control for autonomous (islanded) operation. Additionally, the chapter details the management of bidirectional power flow in the interface inverter through normalization and demand-droop control techniques, mapping the four dynamic operating states under different load and generation conditions. Finally, the critical challenges imposed on conventional protection systems due to the intrinsic limitation of short-circuit currents by static converters during islanding are discussed.
