Abstract: Melasma is a chronic recurrent pigmentary disorder that affects sun-exposed areas, especially in women of childbearing age. The pathogenesis of melasma is not fully understood, but the spots can appear due to factors such as sun exposure, hormones, and pregnancy. The objective of this study was to present cosmetic topical treatments used in the treatment of melasma, suggesting possibilities and care in the treatment. Although there is no curative treatment for melasma, this work reviews the main topical cosmetic active ingredients used in the treatment and control of melasma. The main cosmetic active ingredients currently used to treat melasma are: niacinamide, glycolic acid, tranexamic acid, cysteamine, thiamidol, retinol, kojiko acid, arbutin, vitamin C and mandelic acid. The use of cosmetic active ingredients has the potential to treat hyperpigmentation in a noticeable way, with fewer associated adverse effects, when compared to other treatments such as the use of hydroquinone. Furthermore, the continuous use of sunscreen is essential.
