Abstract: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant disorder that affects one in seven women after the birth of a child. This article explores PPD, examining its impact on the mother-child relationship, differentiating between interactions with the real child and expectations about the imagined child. In addition, it analyzes the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for PPD. The methodology includes a review of the current literature, focusing on clinical and diagnostic studies. The results indicate that PPD can significantly damage the mother-child bond, both in the real and imaginary contexts. It is concluded that early identification and intervention are crucial to mitigate these effects and promote better maternal mental health and child development.
