Abstract: Special education has been the subject of study and research for many years. Much has been discussed about the inclusion of students with disabilities in society, with education being an important agent in this process. Children who were previously sacrificed for being born with a disability began to receive education in a specialized format, separate from regular educational institutions. After long discussions, the need to include them in regular schools was highlighted; however, this process offered, at first, only the integration of these students, as despite being in regular classrooms, they received different care and treatment. With the beginning of inclusive education, disabled students began to be included as a protagonist in the teaching process, being offered an environment that allows them to develop their skills among other classmates, without distinction. The present study was based on bibliographical research with the aim of investigating the evolutionary process of inclusive education and understanding how this process occurs with the education of people who have intellectual disabilities. It was noticed that there are clear advances in this process, such as the change in the curriculum in undergraduate courses, the inclusion of specialized professionals in teaching networks and the process of inclusion of these students under the guidelines of inclusive education, however, This reality is still quite timid and needs to be encouraged so that students with disabilities can actually be included.
