Abstract: To measure the absorbance of the blue complex formed by Phosphorus (P) using the molybdenum blue method, different wavelengths have been suggested in the literature, depending on the source of the method. The objective of this study was to analyze the absorption spectrum of the molybdenum blue complex in order to determine the wavelength of maximum light absorption and to compare the calibration curves for P obtained at 660 and 720 nm. The response of the phosphomolybdic complex, measured in absorbance, was evaluated in solutions containing 2 and 4 mg L⁻¹ of P, using wavelength intervals of 20 nm within the spectral range of 400 to 800 nm. The data were plotted as wavelength versus absorbance response curves for both P concentrations. The effect of wavelength on calibration curve sensitivity was assessed by constructing two curves using P standard solutions: a half-range curve (0.5 to 2.0 mg L⁻¹) and a full-range curve (1.0 to 4.0 mg L⁻¹). The P content was analyzed in six soil samples from the Inland Tablelands of the Recôncavo Baiano, and the means were calculated using the slopes of both the half and full calibration curves. The graphical representation of the light absorption spectrum allowed the identification of 720 nm as the wavelength of maximum absorption for the molybdenum blue complex. The slope (angular coefficient) of the calibration curve at 720 nm was numerically higher than that obtained at 660 nm, confirming that the blue-colored standard solutions absorbed more characteristic light at 720 nm than at 660 nm. The available P content in the soil was higher when the element was quantified using the slope of the calibration curve at 720 nm. It can be concluded that 720 nm is the most appropriate wavelength for the molybdenum blue complex, and that the calibration curve obtained with readings at 660 nm is less sensitive than the one obtained at 720 nm.
