Abstract: The school’s social role extends beyond merely equipping individuals to live in society; it also encompasses providing them with citizenship education. This study aims to investigate whether the high school curriculum addresses the citizenship education of students, taking into account the demands of contemporary society. It investigates the integration of value-based education within the high school curriculum and evaluates the presence of citizenship education in the National Common Core Curriculum. In terms of research approach, this study is both documentary and narrative-theoretical. The analysis reveals that the National Common Core Curriculum is committed to citizenship education, promoting a holistic educational model that seeks to overcome reductionist perspectives focused solely on intellectual or emotional development. It is concluded that the adoption of a competency-based curriculum may restrict the range of topics available for study. Additionally, prioritizing subjects such as Portuguese, Mathematics, and Foreign Languages minimizes the importance of broader areas of human knowledge, potentially compromising the comprehensive development of students and, consequently, their citizenship education.
