Abstract: Introduction: Cancer is a public health problem, with an incidence of about half a million registered Brazilians by 2020. In this regard, cancer is the only cause of death that is always on the rise, regardless of geographic region or socioeconomic factors. It is known that the fight against this disease requires not only technological and medicinal advances, but also a therapeutic approach capable of providing a better quality of life for affected individuals, as well as family members. Objectives: to discuss the perception of medical students as well as physicians regarding palliative care. Methodology: This is a bibliographic research with a search in the Scielo, Pubmed and Up to Date databases, as well as the palliative care manual. Studies from the last 5 years were considered, in Spanish and Portuguese. Results: it was realized that palliative care is of great importance for people who are with some life limitation, even in a terminal state and should be made available soon after diagnosis and applied together with the pharmacological treatment incorporated in the disease. The needs of people in the terminal phase of life can be met with offers of this type and early care. From another perspective, some understand that palliative care has the sole purpose of prolonging life, postponing the end of suffering for both the individual and the family. According to the WHO, we can highlight the application of palliative care as a tool promoted by a multidisciplinary team, seeking to improve the quality of life of the patient and the family. In this context we can highlight according to the palliative care manual some main examples of this conduct, such as: promoting pain relief, affirming life and working on mourning as something natural, not accelerating and postponing death, integrating psychological and spiritual aspects in patient care, among others as examples: Final Considerations: therefore, it is notorious the need to approach this theme, especially in the university environment, since the vision of curative and medicinal medicine still persists, in the care of diseases with long duration or even insufficient attention in the therapy of advanced and potentially fatal diseases.
