Abstract: Extreme weather events are becoming common throughout Brazil and the world. Over the past 40 years, the number of drought periods, with varying intensities, has increased by approximately 10% in the Southeast region. Researchers note that climate variations are acquiring new patterns. Drought monitoring data, supported by scientific evidence, show that climate patterns are changing rapidly, requiring agile mitigation and adaptation actions in various areas and territories. In terms of water resources, according to the National Water Agency, the Paraná River basin faced the lowest level of reservoirs in 91 years in 2021. In this context, water reuse emerges as a strategy to deal with scarcity and as an alternative way to promote environmental balance. The water and climate crisis that Brazil is facing is one of the greatest recent challenges for governments and society as a whole. It directly impacts the supply of drinking water; food production; energy generation; and the well-being and health of the population. This study investigates the causes, consequences and possible solutions for the occurrence of water crises, having as its research universe the municipality of Fernandópolis/SP. It is a study based on secondary sources, literature review and critical analysis of existing federal, state and local legislation on the subject that aims to analyze the reality of the municipality of Fernandópolis with a view to proposing legal alternatives that contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate events on the issue of water supply in the municipality. The research reveals that the implementation of public policies and local legislation that present educational strategies for adapting the population to water reuse can effectively contribute to a sustainable future in a scenario of limited natural resources.
