Abstract: Microbial growth in liquid cosmetic formulations represents an important challenge for the cosmetic industry and public health due to the risk of contamination by microorganisms capable of compromising product quality, stability, and safety. This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the main factors related to microbial growth in liquid cosmetics for human use. The research was conducted in the PubMed, LILACS, Medline, SciELO, and Virtual Health Library (VHL Brasil) databases. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. The results demonstrated a high frequency of microbiological contamination in liquid cosmetic products, mainly caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, in addition to opportunistic fungi and yeasts. Intrinsic factors, such as water activity, pH, and chemical composition of the formulation, as well as extrinsic factors, including inadequate storage, excessive handling, and shared use, were found to directly influence microbial proliferation. Furthermore, the studies highlighted the importance of microbiological control, Good Manufacturing Practices, and preservative system validation to ensure cosmetic stability and sanitary safety. It is concluded that strengthening microbiological control measures and sanitary surveillance is essential to minimize health risks to consumers and ensure the quality of liquid cosmetic products.
