Abstract: Cordia verbenacea, popularly known as erva baleeira, is a native Brazilian plant widely used in infusions and essential oils as an anti-inflammatory agent, being part of a widely distributed herbal medicine, Acheflan®. Since this plant is rich in secondary metabolites, other biological activities have been studied. Thus, this review aims to report studies on other potential activities of C. verbenacea. To this end, articles were searched in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scielo and, BVS Regional Portal databases, using the terms: Cordia curassavica and Cordia verbenacea, erva baleeira, essential oil, and extracts. As a result, it was shown that the leaf extracts and essential oil of C. verbenacea have mainly antimicrobial action. In addition, they have antioxidant, anti-ulcer, antiparasitic, and antiedematogenic action. The main metabolites are mono and sesquiterpenes in the essential oil and phenolic compounds in the leaf extracts. This composition is related to the activities. Thus, C. verbenacea is an important object of study, to expand the knowledge about medicinal plants and their pharmacological performance.
