Abstract: Introduction: Integrative and complementary health practices (PICS) are understood as a set of practices, knowledge and health care products that do not belong to conventional medicine. Although PICS are mainly offered in Primary Health Care, there is still criticism and resistance, even in family and community medicine (MFC). Objective: To discuss the contributions that the inclusion of PICS can make to the practice of preventive medicine. Methodology: Integrative literature review in the LILACS and SCielo databases with publications in Portuguese, English or Spanish after 2012 that were available in full for free. Results and discussion: The search in the databases resulted in 73 publications, but only 6 were included. PICS can improve comprehensiveness, symptom and disease control, demedicalization and are low cost. Final considerations: It should be noted that the benefits of all PICS cannot be generalized and, therefore, there is a need for studies that actually evaluate the effectiveness of each integrative and complementary practice.
