Abstract: Water buffalo breeding became a reality, given its enormous market potential, offering a variety of products to the consumer. The milk has more rentability and the meat has excellent indexes regarding its chemical composition. Leptospirosis is a tropical zoonosis recognized as a problem to the world’s public health in developed and underdeveloped countries. In water buffaloes it can cause reproductive disorders and serious loss in the production of meat and milk, making it difficult for the economic viability of the herd. In infected females it can inflict in infertility, debilitated neonates or stillborn, reduction in conception rates, stillbirth, and abortion. Serological studies indicate high prevalence in several Brazilian states. The implementation of a sanitary program can avoid economic losses in the productive process of buffalo herds.
