Abstract: The success of the calving phase depends on proper management during the prepartum period, with the maternity paddock being essential to ensuring a calm and appropriate environment for birth. Recent studies indicate that, at the end of gestation, physiological changes require adjustments in the space where cows are housed. Separating pregnant cows reduces social stress and facilitates the monitoring of health conditions. The paddock should provide thermal comfort, high-quality feed, fresh water, and good drainage, in addition to being kept clean to prevent diseases and promote calf health. Investing in the infrastructure and management of the maternity paddock is crucial for the productive efficiency of dairy farming. This study aims to highlight how the maternity paddock during the calving phase contributes to cow welfare, based on published literature with studies conducted between 2022 and 2023.
