Conservation production: network for sustainable management of forest seed and seedlings

• Abstract:

  Inserted in the Cacaueira Region of Bahia with an area of ​​15,886 km2 and a population of more than 800 inhabitants, the South Coast Territory is composed of 26 municipalities, with limits in Maraú to the North and Canavieiras to the South, is divided into 03 Camacan sub-territories, Ilhéus and Itabuna (with 2 sub-cores). It has direct identification with the cocoa economy and also with family farming, quilombolas, indigenous people, agrarian reform settlements or small individual farmers, as well as medium and large farmers. Agriculture has its socio-economic-environmental support and cocoa farming, with the cabruca agroforestry system, the main primary activity. Cabruca was largely responsible for the colonization and cultural identity of this geographic space and for the conservation of the most extensive and representative remnants of the Atlantic Forest in agricultural areas. The resumption of regional development on a sustainable basis is related to the modernization and sustainable management of cocoa farming; and, its management is directly related to the adequacy of shading, with direct interference in the shade trees. This will require that seeds and seedlings of tree species of regional origin in quantity, quality and diversity far superior to what is currently offered, be available. The eminent regional demand indicates that the focal problem to be addressed will be the low supply of seeds and seedlings without quality. The execution strategy will be the mobilization, awareness and adequate qualification in the activities necessary for the structuring, initialization and operationalization of a network of seed and seedling collectors, as well as that of seedling producers (nurseries). The central objective is to contribute to making available, in an organized manner, in quantity and quality necessary to meet the regional demand for noble, rare native tree species, under strong anthropic pressure and threatened with extinction. As specific objectives: (i) Sensitize, raise awareness and stimulate the organization; (ii) Qualify and encourage actions. Estimates that more than 300 thousand hectares of cocoa are grown under the cabruca model, which are legally managed (Dec 15,180 / 2014), will require an additional 18 million forest seedlings, 12 million of which are native tree species. This project will provide the necessary bases to meet this imminent demand, with the creation of at least three new “jobs” in the rural area (woodsman, collector and producer of seedlings), benefiting three social segments (the young, the gender ( the woman), the worker of the third age and even the disabled person). It is estimated, for the 3 years of execution, an amount of US $ 1,070,090.00 (R $ 2,375,600.00) in financial resources to cover costing expenses. The planned results are: implantation of a network of collectors and seedling producers, with more than 500 qualified professionals, more than 2500 parent trees, in 50 noble, vulnerable, rare tree species, threatened with extinction and under strong pressure.
