Abstract: Adolescence is a crucial stage in human development, during which a series of changes occur from childhood to adulthood. During this period, the use of legal and illegal substances has been a major public health concern over the years. Worldwide, hookah consumption has expanded since the 1990s, when it was included on restaurant menus in Southeast Asia and North Africa. In Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in its National School Health Survey reports that 22% of students aged 13 to 17 had tried cigarettes at least once; 26.9% had tried hookah, and 16.8% had tried e-cigarettes. This study aims to assess the relationship and impact of hookah/e-cigarette use on adolescent mental health. This is a literature review. Data extraction covered the period from September to November 2024 from the SCIELO, LILACS, BVS, PUBMED, EMBASE, and WEB OF SCIENCE databases. The descriptors used were adolescent, mental health, adolescent behavior, e-cigarette, and hookah, as well as their counterparts in English, Spanish, and French. Primary studies published between 2018 and 2023 were considered inclusion criteria. The results associate e-cigarette/hookah use as a gateway to other drugs, in addition to impaired family relationships as a motivating factor for drug use. Despite the national ban, the use of electronic smoking devices persists among adolescents, requiring educational and preventive measures. It is essential to promote public awareness and strengthen public policies that integrate regulations and awareness-raising initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable groups.
