Abstract: In the contemporary scenario, the importance of Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) becomes increasingly evident, as it exerts a protective effect against infant morbidity and general infections. Furthermore, there is a lower propensity for the development of allergic diseases, contributing to better cognitive, craniofacial, and motor-oral development, as well as reducing the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. For premature newborns, breast milk presents additional benefits, such as a lower incidence and severity of necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, and retinopathy of prematurity. It also promotes an increase in neuropsychomotor performance, strengthens the mother-child bond, reduces hospitalization time, and decreases the incidence of rehospitalizations. The purpose of this research was to list the possible causes and consequences of early weaning. To achieve this goal, an integrative literature review methodology was adopted, exploring and synthesizing the main related studies. The consulted databases were PubMed, SciELO, and BVS. The inclusion criteria for the selected studies encompassed publications in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, in the article format, from 2013 to 2023. The most significant results of this study highlight that early weaning is associated with various complications, such as allergies, respiratory infections, increased body fat, microbial contamination, and gastrointestinal changes, such as diarrhea. Factors that often lead to the interruption of breastfeeding can be attributed to characteristics such as adolescence, non-completion of high school, lack of a partner, income below the minimum wage, low adherence to prenatal care (with fewer than six consultations), lack of adequate breastfeeding guidance, cesarean section, primiparity, preterm birth, low birth weight, bottle and pacifier use.
