Abstract: Introduction: Stroke is the third most frequent cause of death in developing countries such as Brazil, with this injury having fewer incidents than accidents and coronary diseases. Stroke can be one of the complications of atherosclerosis or be caused by other etiologies, as it causes great dependence and loss of communication in addition to other neurological conditions. Objectives: We evaluated the level of alteration of consciousness using the Glasgow Coma Scale in 80 patients affected by stroke and correlated it with sex, age, type of stroke, artery, lobe and involved hemisphere based on computed tomography. Methods: The chi-square statistical test was used to evaluate correlations. Results: In 38.75% of the sample classified as a mild injury, 32.5% as a moderate injury and 28.75% as a severe injury, with the middle cerebral artery being the most affected. While studies have demonstrated male or female predominance, we found equality between the sexes, including in relation to the level of consciousness. It is estimated that around 85% of strokes are of ischemic origin and 15% are hemorrhagic. However, in our study 43% of strokes were ischemic and 56.3% were hemorrhagic. Conclusions: This difference was expected, since the patients included in the research were hospitalized due to a more serious condition.
