Abstract: In this article, we analyze three works of children’s literature classified as informational books (GARRALÓN, 2015), with the aim of identifying representations of children and musical knowledge about symphony orchestras. We begin with a brief reflection on the relationship between children and the book as an object, conceptualizing informational books and discussing aspects such as content, form, cultural and visual repertoire, as well as the modes of presenting the knowledge. We then address the specific features of books dealing with the constitution of orchestras, seeking to identify the strategies used by their authors to explain what orchestras are and which instruments are commonly included in performances and recordings of these ensembles. The works under analysis are contextualized within the broader framework of audience development for so-called concert music, and we discuss possible influences of twentieth-century cultural mediation initiatives in this field. The analysis considers elements such as the relationships between text and image, the musical repertoires employed as examples (examining whether they are made available and how readers may access them), and the ways in which these musical examples are organized within the books. From this perspective, we aim to understand how children’s informational books can contribute to bringing young readers closer to the world of symphony orchestras, highlighting the editorial and pedagogical choices that sustain this mediation.
