Abstract: The AIDS virus is highly aggressive, and there is still no vaccine capable of inhibiting its ability to mutate. The incidence of the disease is increasing every year, especially among young people aged 15 to 23. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the knowledge of high school students at Centro de Ensino Professor Antônio Nonato Sampaio School in Coelho Neto - MA, before and after a lecture on the topic. This is a descriptive study conducted with 96 students from the institution who agreed to participate in the research. The students answered a questionnaire about the etiology of the virus, followed by a lecture on HIV/AIDS and its specificities, and then the questionnaire was re-administered. In the results obtained through this research, regarding the students' knowledge of transmission methods (N= 95.1%), they answered correctly, and after the lecture, this percentage increased (N= 96.9%). With respect to prevention methods, the number of correct answers was (N=74.4%), but after the educational intervention, it decreased to (N= 59.4%). Regarding access to information about the specifics of HIV/AIDS at school or at home, (N= 32.9%) responded that they do not receive any type of information about this sexually transmitted infection. In summary, it was found that despite the majority of participants in this study responding satisfactorily about the transmission methods of HIV/AIDS, many still cannot identify prevention and diagnosis methods or do not have access to information at home or at school. Therefore, there is a need to disseminate information and highlight the risks that this virus can pose to health.
