Abstract: Introduction: The number of medium- and high-complexity surgeries has increased in recent years. Associated with this, the comorbidities presented by patients undergoing surgical procedures demonstrate the need for specific care during the pre- and postoperative periods in inpatient units. With the aim of organizing the work process, the Systematization of Nursing Care (SAE) emerged, which has been used as a care methodology through the Nursing Process, encompassing both direct and indirect care provided by nurses, nursing technicians, and nursing assistants. Objective: To investigate the perception of nursing technicians working in the surgical inpatient unit regarding the Systematization of Nursing Care. Materials and Methods: A qualitative, descriptive study conducted in the second semester of 2022, with nursing technicians working in the surgical inpatient unit of a medium-sized hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data were collected through individual, scheduled, semi-structured interviews, which were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. The study complied with the ethical and scientific requirements established for research involving human subjects, in accordance with Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council. Results: Eight nursing technicians participated in the study. Qualitative findings revealed misconceptions regarding the phenomenological identity of the Systematization of Nursing Care and the Nursing Process, as well as a gap concerning the records necessary to ensure effective and safe continuity of care. Conversely, participants emphasized the importance of the planning and implementation stages of care, empirically described as nursing care guidelines. Final Considerations: Misunderstandings were identified regarding the knowledge of the Systematization of Nursing Care and the stages of the Nursing Process. These results highlight our responsibility, as part of the process, to place greater emphasis on further studies addressing this topic.
