Abstract: INTRODUCTION:The human papilloma virus is an intraepithelial pathogen, with infection by it being the most common sexually transmitted disease and therefore, sexually active men and women will have contact with the virus at some point in their lives. The lack of knowledge about HPV, cervical cancer and its prevention constitutes a vulnerability factor for the development of cervical lesions. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to describe the knowledge of women treated at a basic health unit in São Luís-MA about HPV infection. METHODOLOGY: This is a quantitative research of a descriptive, prospective nature, with the application of a closed questionnaire to women treated at a Basic Health Unit in São Luís. The project presents consolidated opinion nº82011817.1.0000.5084. This is a scientific initiation project, which began in September 2023 and is ongoing. RESULTS: Of the total of 19 women interviewed, and related to sociodemographic data, there was a predominance of women aged between 26 and 40 years old (52% = 10), with primary education (63% = 12), family income of 01 to 1.5 minimum wages (47%= 9), self-declared mixed race (52%= 10), multigravidae (42%=8) and who do not undergo the Pap smear annually (73%=14). Regarding knowledge, (89%=17) stated that they had already heard about HPV. The majority are unaware of the symptoms associated with the infection (68%=13) and believe that there is a relationship between the virus and cervical cancer (52%=10). Women who have heard about HPV recognized the media as the main source of information (63%=12) and regarding prevention measures, the most cited was the use of condoms (47%=9). PARTIAL CONSIDERATIONS: It is important to intensify health education practices, aiming to inform about the main points related to HPV infection, as an important tool in reducing cases of cervical cancer.
