CONCEPÇÕES HISTÓRICAS SOBRE O ENVELHECIMENTO E A DEFICIÊNCIA INTELECTUAL
O envelhecimento humano é um
fenômeno biológico, psicológico e social que
modifica a relação do homem com o tempo,
com o mundo e com a sua própria história. Já
o processo de envelhecimento de pessoas com
deficiência intelectual, é uma discussão recente;
pois, até pouco tempo, essas apresentavam
baixa expectativa de vida. Nesse contexto,
este estudo objetivou discutir a evolução dos
conceitos de envelhecimento e deficiência
intelectual ao longo da história da humanidade.
Trata-se de um estudo bibliográfico de natureza
descritiva retrospectiva. Foi desenvolvida a
consulta de artigos científicos selecionados nas
bases de dados eletrônicos LILACS, MEDLINE,
IBECS e SciELO. Procedeu-se à pesquisa
por meio de consulta das seguintes palavraschaves:
deficiência intelectual; envelhecimento;
processo de envelhecimento, sendo utilizados
somente termos em inglês junto a suas
combinações. A revisão da literatura apresentou
resultados importantes para situar as principais
tendências e explicações nos estudos sobre
envelhecimento e deficiência intelectual. Dos
artigos localizados a partir dos descritores
estabelecidos, chegou-se à elaboração das
principais categorias ou agrupamentos: 1)
Concepções históricas do envelhecimento;
e 2) Concepções históricas da deficiência
intelectual. Verificou-se que, assim como na
história do envelhecimento, ao longo dos anos,
houve distintas formas de ver e acompanhar as
pessoas com deficiência intelectual. Portanto,
conhecer as construções históricas da atenção
a idosos e a pessoas com deficiência intelectual,
proporcionam maior clareza conceitual e,
consequentemente, melhoria na implementação
de serviços de atendimento a esta população e
fomento ao desenvolvimento de pesquisas na
área.

Abstract:
Human aging is a biological, psychological and social phenomenon
that modifies man’s relationship with time, with the world and with his own history.
Already the process of aging of people with intellectual disability, is a recent discussion;
because until recently, these had a low life expectancy. In this context, this study aimed
to discuss the evolution of the concepts of aging and intellectual deficiency throughout
the history of humanity. It is a bibliographical study of retrospective descriptive nature.
It was developed the consultation of selected scientific articles in the electronic
databases LILACS, MEDLINE, IBECS and SciELO. The following keywords were
searched: intellectual disability; aging; aging process, using only English terms along
with their combinations. The literature review presented important results to locate the
main trends and explanations in the studies on aging and intellectual deficiency. From
the articles located from the established descriptors, the main categories or groups
were elaborated: 1) Historical conceptions of aging; and 2) Historical conceptions of
intellectual disability. It has been found that, as in the history of aging, over the years,
there have been different ways of seeing and accompanying people with intellectual
disabilities. Therefore, knowing the historical constructions of care for the elderly and
people with intellectual disabilities, provide greater conceptual clarity and, consequently,
improvement in the implementation of care services to this population and fostering the
development of research in the area.
