Abstract: In dentistry, a widely used technique for planning and/or procedures is the dental impression. It consists of acquiring a molded arc negative to obtain a faithful plastered copy of the patient's oral cavity. This procedure, however, brings discomfort to the patient and high expenses to the dentist. Nowadays, it is available on the market a device that scans the jaws, replacing this conventional impression, however, the cost to acquire this equipment is still very high. To solve this problem, this study proposes the creation of an intraoral scanning device with efficiency and lower cost. Therefore, it was realized a bibliographic review on dental impression techniques and digital scanning aiming at the development of a 3D scanner prototype. A prototype for scanning solids was developed, in which the object rotates around its axis and the scanner remains fixed during the image acquisition. Scans were performed, going through stages of image acquisition and cropping, color treatment, and application of algorithms to obtaining coordinates, in order to create point clouds. As a result of this work, we obtained a 3D point cloud of a solid, using technologies that are easy to acquire. We can conclude that digital impression, by scanning, is faithful and in the long-term has lower costs than the conventional impression.
