Abstract: The UN has declared the Decade on Ecological Restoration of Ecosystems for the period 2020-2030 (UN, 2019). The concepts that establish the term restoration are used for the process that seeks to help the reestablishment of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged or destroyed and the term recovery to refer to the result after the success of the restoration. In the context of degradation and loss of mangrove areas in Brazil (and in the world), the recovery of this ecosystem has been configured as one of the main practices that can bring efficient results for the sustainable development of the coastal zone. To achieve success, ecological restoration must be effective, efficient and participatory (KEENLEYSIDE et al. 2012), that is, it conserves the characteristics of the ecosystem, maximizes benefits, reduces losses, costs, and promotes cooperation between different social, public, private and community segments. Thus, there is a need to develop methodologies and strategies for the recovery of important mangrove ecosystems, in addition to the dissemination of scientific information and integration of the knowledge generated for the reality of education. Based on the success in the recovery of mangroves covering places such as Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, three different areas in the Maranhão Gulf, including a methodology for community restoration of mangroves, a set of practical approaches, principles and concepts is presented, which, at the same time, follow the most current international guidelines for the ecological restoration of ecosystems.
