Abstract: This study investigates the use of fog computing in urban traffic management, analyzing its benefits and challenges. Fog computing is presented as an evolution of cloud computing by enabling decentralized data processing closer to the source of generation — such as sensors and IoT devices — resulting in faster and more effective responses in traffic control. Applications such as vehicle flow monitoring, traffic signal management, and real-time navigation systems are highlighted. The article also discusses the main obstacles to its implementation, including issues of interoperability, information security, data privacy, and integration with legacy infrastructures. Through the analysis of real-world cases in cities like Barcelona and San Francisco, the potential of the technology to improve urban mobility and reduce environmental impacts becomes evident. The study concludes that fog computing, when implemented with responsibility and planning, represents a promising solution to the contemporary challenges of urban mobility.
