Abstract: Osseointegration is defined as the perfect integration between the implant surface and the bone. It is indispensable in the process of adaptation of the implant in the individual's body, in addition to being necessary for correct rehabilitation. Systemic diseases are limiting oral rehabilitation with implants because they interfere with the osseointegration phenomenon. The aim of this study is to carry out a narrative review of the indexed literature regarding the biological aspects of systemic impairments that can interfere with the osseointegration process, in order to identify and describe aspects of greater and lesser influence in this process. The terms “osseointegration of implants” and “systemic diseases” were searched. The PubMed/Medline database was used, in which 83 articles were initially identified. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 8 articles were selected to include in the study. Some systemic impairments with a higher incidence in patients were felt, namely, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, immunosuppressed patients (oncology, HIV positive, rheumatoid arthritis) and smoking. We concluded that knowledge about the systemic aspects of the patient is necessary. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a detailed anamnesis and an individualized treatment plan.
