Este artigo apresenta um estudo

exploratório cujo objetivo foi conhecer as

diferentes noções de infinito matemático

elaboradas por 12 sujeitos entre 13 e 73 anos

de idade, com graus diferentes de escolaridade.

O estudo fundamenta-se teoricamente na

Epistemologia Genética e sua metodologia

é inspirada no método clínico piagetiano.

Como instrumentos de investigação, foram

construídas três provas com materiais

concretos e uma entrevista semiestruturada.

Com provas cujos resultados tendem ao infinito

ou a números muito grandes, observou-se

como o sujeito encara a possibilidade sem a

materialidade. A entrevista abordou questões

que fazem o sujeito pensar sobre o infinito em

diferentes situações do cotidiano. Foi possível

chegar a três categorias de entendimento sobre

o infinito matemático: Existência Inconcebível,

Existência pouco previsível e Infinito como

uma representação de algo que não tem fim.

Conclui-se que a noção de infinito independe

da idade ou grau de instrução do sujeito.

Abstract:
This article presents an

exploratory study which the purpose is to

understand the different mathematical infinity

notions on 12 subjects, from 13 to 73 years old

and different degrees of education. The study is

based on Genetic Epistemology theory and the

methodology is inspired by the Piagetian clinical

method. The research tools have been design,

consisting in three activities involving handling

experiments and a semi-structured interview.

Through activities tending to infinite or to very

large numbers, we observed how the subject

treats the possibility without materiality. The

interview addressed issues on how the subject

thinks about the infinity in everyday situations.

Through this study was possible to arrive at

three categories of understanding about the

mathematical infinity: Existence Inconceivable,

Existence little conceivable and Infinite as a

representation of something that has no end.

We conclude that the notion of infinity does not

depend on age or instruction degree of subject.
