• Abstract: Among the complications of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), diabetic foot stands out, characterized by ulcerative lesions and tissue destruction. It is one of the leading causes of lower limb amputation. The most effective preventive measures include early detection, education, and health promotion to increase knowledge, motivation, and understanding of self-care. Objective: To report the experience of medical students observing diabetic patients' understanding of health information about diabetic foot self-care. Method: This is a report of an academic experience during a medical school internship in Primary Care, related to the Teaching, Service, and Community Integration (IESC) course, between February and June 2025. Patient observation occurred during weekly medical appointments and follow-ups, as well as dressing procedures performed by the nursing team. Results: Patients' reduced understanding and engagement in self-care and simple cleaning and hygiene practices for the diabetic foot were evident. During medical appointments and when dressings were applied by the nursing team, patients were provided with guidance on health care and habit changes to promote and encourage self-care and self-awareness, particularly regarding diabetic foot complications, proper cleaning, and dressing care. Final considerations: Experiencing the care of diabetic foot patients in primary care has allowed us to understand the importance of ongoing health education. Continuous and repeated guidance can improve self-care skills and prevent injury worsening.
